Course overview

The role of the company director is a difficult one, fraught with challenges and weighed by legal duties and responsibilities. Even if you are experienced in the role there are always new developments, changes in law or major events that affect the way you and your board need to operate. The pandemic is the most stark example of this but there are many more.

This 3-hour course will serve as a refresher of the fundamental principles of being an effective company director. It will also update you on changes in legal regulations, case law or guidance that impacts your role as a company director. Furthermore, our expert presenter will discuss corporate governance trends and future developments of which you need to be aware.

Course content

This course will cover the following subjects...

  • A brief refresher of the director’s general duties
  • A reminder of the role and purpose of the board
  • The importance of leadership, values and culture – has this changed during the pandemic?
  • The lessons from the collapse of Carillion
  • EDI: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the boardroom

  • Horizon scanning: forthcoming developments relevant to directors

Who should attend?

This course will serve as an excellent refresher on the duties and obligations of a company director for those established in the role and will update them on legal and corporate changes.  It will also be useful for new directors who have a need to know more about corporate governance issues. Company Secretaries will also benefit from attending in regard to their responsibility to ensure boardroom compliance.

  • David Joel

    David is a Chartered Director and has been facilitating, delivering and mentoring at senior management and director level for the last ten years in both the public and private sectors. He has also provided training and consultancy services to the Institute of Directors for 11 years and has broad practical experience of business change management and in mergers and acquisition.
