Course Talk: Company Secretaries - Best Practice in the Boardroom

UK Training helps Company Secretaries get the best out of their boards.

I recently had the pleasure of attending the first presentation of Company Secretaries - Best Practice in the Boardroom. It was an enjoyable and hugely informative day that the presenter facilitated with great skill and expertise.

Who attended the course?

What made the course particularly interesting was the varied range of experience amongst the Company Secretaries attending the course. One person I spoke to had only recently assumed the role while another two had more than seventy years combined experience between them! There were also attendees who carried out company secretarial functions for many different companies and attended up to a hundred board meetings a year.

This dynamic mix resulted in a high-quality event where delegates were able to share practical advice and learn a great deal from each other's experiences and lessons learned. The presenter was very skilled in channeling this creativity for the benefit of the group and even those company secretaries with decades of experience left feeling they had picked up something useful. One delegate commented on their feedback: “It was a really good day and the opportunity to discuss particular subjects within groups and hear about other people's experiences really helped in bringing the subject to life.”

How did the presenter use her experience to help the attendees?

The presenters vast experience as a company secretary came across very clearly and was readily able to address the issues and answer all of the questions raised during the day. For example, some people found that they were having to deal with conflicts between the chairman and directors and did not know how to handle it. The presenter outlined a number of scenarios from her own experience that worked well in the past and was able to recommend appropriate actions to take.

Almost all attendees commented that they had all learnt valuable skills and tips that they would be able to apply within their own organisation. One said: "I learned a lot, particularly about Company Secretarial reports and board protocols. I have something really practical to take back to the office."

Other features of the course...

One of the key tactics that the presenter suggested all Company Secretaries should have at their disposal is the use of protocols to deal with various boardroom situations. During discussions, delegates came up with several scenarios for which they would like to develop protocols for their own boards including director's behaviour, dealing with conflicts, presentation of papers and virtual meeting arrangements.

When is this course being presented again?

After the success of this first presentation, we have added a number of new dates for this course and places are already starting to fill up fast.
