Course talk - Sietske de Groot helps businesses prepare for life after Brexit

Posted on 17 February 2020SharePrint

I was very pleased to attend the first presentation of our brand new one-day course Brexit – Preparing for the Future, which explains the situation regarding international trade and employment during the current transition period and beyond.

The course was being held at 46 New Broad Street, a two-minute walk from Liverpool Street station and a very popular venue with our regular attendees. As one delegate wrote on their feedback form onthis day, it is “a really nice environment to attend a training course”

An expert in the field...

The presenter, Sietske de Groot, is a well-known and widely-recognised EU expert. Sietske has worked on EU legislation and EU free trade deals throughout her career and knows what can and cannot be reasonably expected from the EU-UK negotiations. Building on her knowledge and experience with existing trade deals and with EU regulation, Sietske narrows down exactly what will change and in which direction other things can change.

Sietske was able to share many insights with which delegates were generally unaware about the probable future relationship and how it would impact on practical matters, such as the use of customs declarations and completion of Intrastat.

Addressing the delgates concerns...

At the start of the day, one delegate was concerned that there were too many pieces of the jigsaw missing to properly prepare for life after Brexit. However, Sietske was clear that there are many things we already know and the rest can be inferred from a limited number of options. There are elements of the future trading arrangements that have already been agreed or are set out under WTO rules. Other aspects are highly likely to closely resemble existing treaties with other countries, such as Canada.

People had concerns about retaining their EU workers, future recruitment, moving goods around, VAT and customs arrangements between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. However, most concern for a section of this audience was the provision of services in the EU by UK companies. There will be serious implications for those companies involved in this aspect of international trade.

The 28 people that attended were senior people from a wide range of industries, including real estate, software development, construction, financial services, telecoms, import/export and various manufacturers.

The feedback was very good, with one delegate writing “this is the first session I have seen that could cover so many topics regarding Brexit and give you the tools to check how it impacts your business.” Another said to me: “I’d really like to book an in-house course for our board of directors, they are not aware of half of it.”

If the way your business operates is likely to be impacted by Brexit, then I would recommend you attend one of Sietske’s next presentations of Brexit – Preparing for the Future
